Flight Over Manchester
Shooting from "In The Shadows" is one of my favourite techniques. I feel like it anchors the photograph, frames the subject, and provides drama. What you can't see vs what is out there. Its cinematic, perhaps in a slightly horror movie or film noir sense (search for chiaroscuro lighting!). It makes the photographer and therefore the view feel a bit inconsequential. When I shoot a photo like this I intentionally underexpose (usually I expose for the sky and then sometimes even stop down again).
Would this photo have worked with the jet trail? I doubt it. It would have been a photo of a lamppost. The aeroplane makes it an interesting composition and a [fairly relaxed] action shot.
